A 20,000 gallon pool with an 8-hour turnover target needs about 41.7 GPM of design flow:
20,000 ÷ (8 × 60) = 41.7 GPM.
Using the reference media rates in this calculator, the buffered planning areas are about 2.6 sq ft sand, 104 sq ft cartridge, or 26 sq ft DE. These are planning values, not a substitute for the selected filter manufacturer's rated flow, plumbing limits, pump curve, or required backwash flow.

These rates are reference planning values, not universal code limits. Pentair's current Clean & Clear documentation shows a recommended cartridge flow rate of 0.5 GPM/sq ft, its FNS Plus DE filters are rated at 2 GPM/sq ft, and Pentair sand-filter documentation uses up to about 20 GPM/sq ft for high-rate sand designs. Different models can use different ratings.
🏖️ Sand filters
Sand filters are commonly specified by tank/model and effective filter area. The required operating flow must fit the model's published flow rating, and the pump must also be capable of the backwash flow required by that filter. A larger tank is not useful if the plumbing or pump cannot support the manufacturer's operating and backwash requirements.
🧻 Cartridge filters
Cartridge filters provide a large pleated surface area without a backwash cycle. For planning, this calculator uses 0.5 GPM per square foot because Pentair lists that as a recommended flow reference on its Clean & Clear documentation. The exact selected model's rated flow still controls, and a larger cartridge area can lengthen the interval between cleanings.

DE filters are normally selected from manufacturer models with stated filter area and flow ratings. Pentair's FNS Plus line, for example, pairs 24, 36, 48 and 60 square feet with rated flows based on 2 GPM per square foot. Backwash/recharge requirements and local rules also matter when comparing DE with other filter types.
⚖️ Bigger isn't always the whole answer
Extra filter area can reduce loading per square foot, but the filter, pump, valves, heater, chlorinator and plumbing operate as one hydraulic system. The final choice should satisfy both the filter's manufacturer limits and the pump/system flow that exists in the real installation.
Pool turnover rate calculator — how it works
Turnover time is the theoretical time required for the circulation system to move a volume of water equal to the pool's volume. Required design flow is:
GPM = pool volume ÷ (turnover hours × 60)
A turnover calculation does not prove that every water molecule passed through the filter, and residential operating schedules are not governed by one universal turnover number. Use the turnover target appropriate to your equipment, local requirements, and operating goals. Public/commercial rules can be much stricter and vary by venue and jurisdiction.
A turnover calculation answers one narrow question: what average flow would move a volume equal to the pool volume in the selected number of hours? It does not prove that every gallon takes the same path through the filter, and it does not replace circulation design, skimming, brushing or sanitizer control.
For example, 20,000 gallons divided by 8 hours and 60 minutes is about 41.7 GPM. If you choose a different turnover goal, the required planning flow changes proportionally. Before buying equipment, compare that target with the actual pump curve at the system's expected total dynamic head and the maximum/rated flow of every major component.
Sand filter tank size — use model specifications
Sand filter diameter is only a rough proxy for filtration area. Two filters with similar tank diameters can have different internals, design flows, valves, and backwash requirements.

Do not choose a filter from diameter alone. Round up to a real model whose published rated flow meets or exceeds your design flow, and verify the pump can produce the needed flow at the actual system head.
Tank diameter is useful for shopping, but it is only a shorthand. Two filters with similar-looking tanks can have different internal geometry, media requirements, plumbing connections and rated flow. Use the model's published effective filtration area and flow table rather than converting a calculated square-foot number into a universal tank diameter.
Backwashing is another reason to check the exact model. Sand and many DE systems need enough reverse flow to clean the media correctly; a filter that is oversized relative to available pump/backwash flow can be a poor match even when its normal filtration area looks generous.
Signs your pool filter is the wrong size
🔴 Too small
Cloudy water despite balanced chemistry, rapid pressure gauge climb, needing to backwash or clean more than once a week, and a pump that seems to be working harder than expected.
🟡 Too big for your pump
Pressure gauge barely moves between cleanings even after weeks of use, and backwashing doesn't seem to fully clear the sight glass — a sign there isn't enough flow to properly lift and clean the media.
✅ Right-sized
Pressure climbs gradually and predictably, cleaning is needed every 2-4 weeks under normal use, and water stays clear between chemical treatments.

First calculate the design flow from pool volume and turnover target. Then select a real filter model whose manufacturer-rated flow is at least that high and whose plumbing/backwash requirements match your system. For a 20,000 gallon pool at an 8-hour turnover, the design flow is about 41.7 GPM.
How do I calculate pool filter GPM?
GPM = pool volume in gallons ÷ (turnover hours × 60). For 15,000 gallons and an 8-hour turnover: 15,000 ÷ 480 = 31.25 GPM.
What is a good pool turnover rate?
There is no single residential turnover time that fits every pool and jurisdiction. The calculator offers 6, 8, 10, and 12 hours as planning choices. Commercial/public facilities can have mandatory turnover requirements, so follow the applicable local code for those pools.
Sand vs cartridge vs DE — which filter size is right for me?
Choose by the exact model's rated flow, filter area, maintenance method, water-use constraints, and desired filtration performance. Sand, cartridge, and DE use different media and therefore cannot be compared by square footage alone.
Can a pool filter be too big?
A larger filter area is often helpful, but the complete system still has to work together. Sand and DE filters need enough backwash flow, and every filter has model-specific plumbing and flow limits. Verify the selected model against the pump and plumbing rather than assuming bigger is always automatically compatible.
What happens if my pool filter is too small?
If actual system flow exceeds a filter's rating or the filter has too little dirt-holding area for the application, pressure can rise quickly and cleaning can become frequent. Persistent cloudiness can also have chemistry or circulation causes, so diagnose the whole system.
What size sand filter tank do I need?
Use the calculator's area estimate only as a starting point, then choose a real sand-filter model from its published flow table. Tank diameter alone does not establish the model's allowable flow or backwash requirement.
How often should I clean or backwash my filter?
Use the manufacturer's pressure/flow guidance rather than a fixed calendar. For example, Pentair's FNS Plus support guidance calls for backwashing when pressure is about 10 PSI above the clean starting pressure or when flow is significantly reduced.
Does my pump size need to match my filter size?
The filter's rated flow must accommodate the system's actual operating flow, and the pump must be able to deliver the desired flow through the real plumbing resistance. Compare pump curves and filter ratings; do not match equipment from horsepower alone.
